There are a lot of charities out there that seem to revolve around the concept of housing—which is, of course, not a big surprise. Housing is one of our most basic human needs. And if you’re strapped for cash—particularly in this perilous economy—it’s one of the most difficult needs to meet. There are so many homeless men and women and even children out there that the opportunities for service—via some sort of housing project—are ample, with Habitat for Humanity being arguably the most well-known and widely-recognized example.
And Habitat is, indeed, a truly great organization, but it is hardly the only charity that involved providing homes for those who need them. A slightly lesser-known—but equally worthy—group, Homes for Our Troops, caters to a more specific group and has a more precise aim, but it is nevertheless a terrific organization that has won the support of many—including real estate professional and military veteran Justin Singletary.
We invoke Justin Singletary here by way of introducing what Homes for Our Troops is all about, because in a way, it’s something of a composite of these two facets of Justin Singletary’s life and personality. Essentially, this is a group that serves veterans of the U.S. military (Justin Singletary served in both Iraq and Afghanistan) by providing them with housing.
And it’s not quite as simple as it sounds. For one thing, it’s important to note that this organization serves only those veterans who served in the wake of September 11th, 2001, as Justin Singletary himself did. It’s equally important to note that Homes for Our Troops is a charity for those men and women who have returned from duty with severe injuries or disabilities—and that the houses provided are specially designed to accommodate any particular physical needs.
The houses are also provided completely free of cost to the veterans themselves—rather remarkable, when you think about just how costly and elaborate an operation like this must be. Yet the fact that Homes for Our Troops wins the support of folks like Justin Singletary does much to demonstrate just how welcome an outfit like this is in the veteran community, and even among real estate professionals, whose stamp of approval suggests that this group is doing some real, practical good. It’s a great way to provide a housing service to those who truly need it—and who, we will all admit, have more than earned it.
